Good morning!
“It is very difficult to estimate how well a computer can be made to play with ideal programming. I tend to agree that it would be very difficult to reach the caliber of world champions or even most chess masters but I do not regard this as unthinkable. The machines do have certain very strong advantages of accuracy, speed, etc., and our present techniques of programming are bound to improve enormously in the future.”

It is Wednesday, October 14th and we are live on X and YouTube at 9 AM PT · noon ET
Guest lineup
9:30 AM PT · Cameron Berg · Founder and Director, Reciprocal Research
Runs experiments probing what happens inside language models, including a pain-related pattern found across 25 models and work showing different choices when hidden internal states change while the visible conversation stays fixed. Today: what those effects justify for AI training and treatment, why more consciousness claims don’t mean more truth, and what evidence would shift the assessment.
10:15 AM PT · Phil Maher · Stockfilm.com
Turned his grandfather’s home movies into an archive of more than 162,000 clips, and experiments with AI tools that date footage, reconstruct blurred faces and generate old-Paris scenes. Today: how much AI restoration an archive can use before it alters history, why a restoration score isn’t a historical verdict, and whose everyday lives survived on film.

Karpathy maps a widening AI capability funnel
His numbers are napkin math, but the gap between what insiders and the public see is a real problem for oversight.
Karpathy estimates about 5,000 people (~0.00006%) have internal access to frontier systems, where agent swarms work for weeks on large projects. Andrej Karpathy on X
He puts professional frontier users in math and code at around 20M people, and says human review is starting to fall behind. Andrej Karpathy on X
Anthropic says daily merges rose from 2,500 in May to over 30,000 in September because of agent code, pushing it off Git onto an in-house system called Scion. Anthropic Engineering
roon forecasts a jump in mechanistic interpretability
A forecast from an OpenAI researcher, not an announced result, and he says so.
roon expects strong mechinterp progress in coming months, possibly more than in years, as models get good enough to do research. roon on X
He says the updates he has seen are not his to share. roon on X
He notes not everyone agrees, while arguing interpretability could lead to provable alignment. roon on X
Hidden recorder case puts insider risk at OpenAI on the record
An insider threat story that echoes AI 2027, though nothing here shows stolen weights.
DOJ announced on October 13 the arrest of an OpenAI engineer charged with installing a hidden encrypted recording device in an executive conference room. U.S. Department of Justice
OpenAI says it used its models to analyze the device and identify the employee, then referred the matter to the FBI. OpenAI Newsroom
OpenAI says it has no indication of access to model weights, source code or customer data. OpenAI Newsroom
Clip of the Day
Runtime Verification CEO Everett Hildenbrandt, who’s running for office in Utah, on using Claude without an agent swarm:
“My entire campaign was done by Claude, basically.”
Claude handles his website, campaign materials, speech drafts and debate prep. Door-knocking and public debates remain human work.
He also uses Claude for his company and nonprofit role.
“Everything fits in the premium or max plans.”
Getting elected doesn’t offer a quick success check: he won’t know whether he’s won until election day. He says running a nonprofit is also hard to optimize that way.
“It’s really just an assistant at that point. I don’t need 10,000 agents doing the thing.”
